West Palm Beach — Where to Stay.

"The best hotel in West Palm Beach" is a fantasy — a different one wins for each of these trips, and on a different side of the water. Here's the work behind each pick: our call, who it's for, who it's not for, the reasoning, and the one dinner we'd pair with it.

Old-Money Luxury Couple

The Breakers Palm Beach

Our call

The West Palm hotel for a luxury couple when only the definitive Palm Beach grand-resort address will do — and you've confirmed the renovation won't touch your stay.

Why we chose it

An aerial view at dusk of The Breakers resort in Palm Beach — the cream Italian-Renaissance palace with red-tile roofs and twin belvedere towers, the Atlantic Ocean stretching behind it

It's the island's grand-resort icon — an Italian-Renaissance landmark on roughly 140 oceanfront acres, family-owned by Henry Flagler's heirs for generations. The scale is the point: 534 rooms, a private half-mile beach, four oceanfront pools, around ten restaurants and eight bars, two golf courses, a spa, and tennis. Less a hotel than a self-contained Palm Beach institution.

One flag up front, because it shapes the stay: The Breakers is in an active, multi-phase renovation running April 2026 through April 2027 — a rebuilt family-entertainment center (demolition began mid-2026) and a redone Mediterranean Courtyard with a new glass conservatory. The hotel stays open throughout, but there is on-site construction.

🪙 Smart Alternative: The Brazilian Court — the same old-money island romance, minus the construction and the crowds: a courtyard-classic boutique going since 1926, suites arranged around lush fountain gardens, with Daniel Boulud's Café Boulud downstairs. You trade The Breakers' oceanfront scale for a quiet, residential Palm Beach address a short walk from Worth Avenue and Midtown Beach. (Still a top island-boutique rate — for real savings, cross to the mainland.)

Pair it with dinner at Ta-boó — the Worth Avenue icon reborn under Thomas Keller, if you can confirm it's open. (Full dinner picks on Where to Eat.)

Spa & Wellness Escape

Eau Palm Beach Resort & Spa

Our call

The West Palm hotel for a wellness escape when the spa is the whole trip and being in a town isn't the point.

Why we chose it

It's an oceanfront Forbes Five-Star, AAA Five-Diamond resort on about seven private acres in Manalapan, just south of the island — and it's built around its spa. The Eau Spa runs 42,000 square feet and carries its own Forbes Five-Star rating; add Jonathan Adler's colorful interiors across 309 rooms, two pools, three Har-Tru tennis courts, kids' and teen clubs, and Nobu on site, and it's a self-contained wellness-and-luxury world.

🪙 Smart Alternative: there's no cheaper oceanfront destination-spa in this market — Eau's 42,000-square-foot spa is the reason to book it. The on-island option is The Breakers, whose full spa sits inside the marquee grand resort (with the 2026–27 renovation caveat above) — a different setting, not a lower price. To spend less, book Eau off-peak; the spa, the private beach, and the Atlantic don't change with the rate.

Pair it with dinner at PB Catch — the island's upscale seafood and raw bar, a clean, restorative night. (Full dinner picks on Where to Eat.)

Art & Culture Lover

The Colony Hotel

Our call

The West Palm hotel for a culture-and-design lover when you want the whimsical-Palm-Beach base, walkable to Worth Avenue and the galleries.

Why we chose it

It's the pink Palm Beach icon — a social institution since 1947, a block off Worth Avenue, freshly redesigned by Kemble Interiors into a fully-realized "Palm Beach Luxe" world: 79 rooms in schemes with names like "Bloom" and "Pink Deco," a pool, and a bar with a genuine scene. For a traveler who reads a hotel as design, it's the room and the reason you came.

🪙 Smart Alternative: White Elephant Palm Beach — a different design mood at the same top-boutique tier: a Nantucket-brand hotel in a restored 1920s Mediterranean landmark on the island's north end, all New-England-meets-Palm-Beach restraint (and Travel + Leisure "World's Best" recognition — confirm the current rank). You trade The Colony's maximalist pink for calm, and the Worth Avenue doorstep for a quieter north-island address. For real savings, the mainland's The Ben keeps you walkable to the Norton and downtown culture for a tier less.

Pair it with dinner at Buccan — Clay Conley's buzzy island small-plates flagship, built for grazing. (Full dinner picks on Where to Eat.)

Younger / Value City Break

The Ben, Autograph Collection

Our call

The West Palm hotel for a younger or value-minded trip when you want a walkable downtown, a rooftop pool, and a friendlier bill than the island.

Why we chose it

It's the only hotel on the West Palm Beach waterfront — a 208-room Autograph Collection boutique on the Intracoastal, facing the island across the marina, one block from Clematis Street and a walk from Rosemary Square. The signature is the rooftop: an expansive pool and bar with marina and island views. It plants you in the middle of the mainland's walkable core, at a friendlier bill than the island.

🪙 Smart Alternative: Canopy by Hilton West Palm Beach Downtown — the value play for the same walkable-mainland trip: a design-forward lifestyle hotel with its own rooftop pool and Treehouse bar, about a ten-minute walk to Clematis, for less than The Ben's waterfront address. You trade the on-the-water location and the marina views for real savings and a still-central base. (The rooftop scene, and the island a bridge away, don't change.)

Pair it with dinner at The Regional — Lindsay Autry's Southern-inflected public house in Rosemary Square, a walk from the Kravis. (Full dinner picks on Where to Eat.)
