Worth it? YES, one of the great day hikes in America, and SCALABLE to your fitness: the Vernal Fall footbridge is a rewarding moderate turnaround; the top of Vernal (or on to Nevada) is a bucket- list valley hike for the fit. The play: start EARLY (Happy Isles shuttle; parking/heat/crowds), wear grippy shoes and expect to get wet in spring, carry water, and descend Nevada via the drier John Muir Trail if doing the loop. Go in spring/early summer for the full misty drama.

Who it’s NOT for: Anyone wanting a flat, easy stroll — beyond the footbridge it's a steep, wet, strenuous granite-step climb. Visitors uneasy on slick rock or with mobility limits — the mist section is slippery and stepped. Late-summer visitors expecting the full misty roar — flow drops (still a fine hike, less spray).

Skip it if: You can't manage steep, wet, slick granite steps, or you want a flat walk — do Lower Yosemite Fall or the valley loop instead. In peak snowmelt, the mist section can be dangerously slick/crowded.

Time needed: Footbridge ~1–1.5 hr RT; top of Vernal ~3 hr RT; Nevada Fall loop ~5–7 hr RT. (research: NPS)

Best time: Spring–early summer for the misty drama (grippy shoes, rain layer); start at dawn for parking/heat/ crowds. Confirm current conditions (winter/early-spring ice or closures on upper sections).

Cost: $Booking: none — no reservation or fee beyond park entrance. "Book" an early start and good footwear. (Continuing to Half Dome requires the separate Half Dome permit.)
