Wildlife Safety & Distance Rules

Bison at a distance in a steaming basin — keep your distance from wildlife
Worth it? ESSENTIAL. The two numbers to memorize: 100 YARDS from bears and wolves, 25 YARDS from bison and everything else. The most common mistake is treating calm-looking bison as safe for a photo — that's how people get gored. Watch with binoculars or a zoom lens, from your vehicle when you can, and back off if an animal reacts to you.

Who it’s NOT for: No one — these rules apply to every visitor, whether you came for wildlife or not; animals appear on roads, in developed areas, and at pullouts. (As an "activity" it's not a destination) — it's guidance to carry everywhere in the park, not a place to go.

Skip it if: Never — do not skip this; it is basic to a safe Yellowstone trip and to not harming the wildlife.

Time needed: A few minutes to read and internalize before your first drive/hike — then carried everywhere in the park. (research: NPS wildlife safety)

Best time: Read before you go; the rules are identical year-round. Wildlife is most active (and encounters most likely) at dawn and dusk — exactly when watchers are out.

Cost: $Booking: N/A — safety guidance, not a bookable activity. Carry bear spray, keep the distances, watch with optics. Verify current guidance live.
