St. Pete & Clearwater — What to Do.

St. Pete & Clearwater is really two days in one name: one downtown on foot among the museums and murals, one out at the Gulf for the sand and the sunset. Here's what earns your time on each — and, where there's a real choice to make, how we'd make it.

Downtown, on foot

🖼️ The one museum to make time for → The Dalí Museum. The largest collection of Salvador Dalí's work outside Europe, inside a landmark glass "Enigma" bubble on the downtown waterfront. Pre-book on peak days; it's the anchor of any downtown morning.

🎨 The open-air gallery → the SHINE-festival murals on Central Avenue. A free, self-guided walk through one of Florida's densest concentrations of large-scale outdoor murals, running the Grand Central and EDGE districts. Go on foot, camera ready.

🫧 The glass → the Chihuly Collection. A dedicated gallery of Dale Chihuly's blown-glass work, a short step off Central Avenue — a quick, worth-it duck-in on the mural walk.

🌉 The waterfront → the St. Pete Pier. A free 26-acre waterfront district on the bay, with public art, a rooftop, and a marketplace. Easy, open, and the best way to end a downtown afternoon.

🦩 The quiet hour → Sunken Gardens. A calm hour among the flamingos in a century-old botanical garden — the slow, green counterweight to a museum-and-mural day.

The beach decision

There are three ways to go, and they're not interchangeable — pick by the day you want, not by which is "best":

🏖️ Clearwater Beach — the lively resort strip. Wide white sand, the Beach Walk promenade, dolphin-cruise docks, and the nightly Sunset at Pier 60 festival. The postcard beach day — busiest and most built-up.

🌴 St. Pete Beach — the low-key south end. The quieter barrier-island stretch about 20–30 minutes from downtown, with the historic village of Pass-a-Grille at the south tip. The choice for a calmer strand still close to the city.

🏝️ Fort De Soto — the wild, top-ranked sand. A county park about 30–45 minutes out — the quietest, most natural Pinellas beach, repeatedly ranked among the best in the country. Go early for parking in high season.

Our take: for the lively strip and the sunset festival, Clearwater; for the wildest, quietest sand and a real nature day, Fort De Soto; St. Pete Beach splits the difference — a calmer south end within easy reach of downtown.

🌅 The sunset, wherever you land → Sunset at Pier 60. The free nightly festival at the foot of Clearwater Beach — craft vendors and street performers gather on the sand as the sun drops over the Gulf. The one to build the evening around; time your beach day to end here.

🐬 With kids → the Clearwater Marine Aquarium. A working marine-rescue center on Island Estates. One honest note if you're coming for the "Dolphin Tale" star: Winter died in 2021 — her memorial garden is there, she isn't. Go for the rescue mission, not to meet Winter.

A Two-Day Itinerary

Day-shapes, not a minute-by-minute plan — enough to know your trip will hang together. This is a two-base region, so a first-timer's two days split naturally: one downtown on foot, one out at the Gulf. A car earns its keep on Day 2.

Day 1 — Downtown St. Petersburg, on Foot.

• Morning: start at The Dalí Museum — the landmark glass "Enigma" on the downtown waterfront (pre-book on peak days) — then wander Beach Drive's park-facing blocks.
• Midday: walk Central Avenue for the SHINE-festival murals, and duck into the Chihuly Collection for the glass. Lunch on Beach Drive — see Where to Eat.

• Morning: drive to the sand — Clearwater Beach for the wide white resort strip and the Beach Walk, or about 30–45 minutes to Fort De Soto for the quiet, wild, top-ranked barrier-island sand.
