Why we chose it
It's the 1928 "Pink Palace" — a Moorish and Mediterranean-Revival landmark on St. Pete Beach (3400 Gulf Blvd), on the National Register of Historic Places, with about 277 rooms, multiple pools, a spa, several restaurants, and the Gulf at the door. It sits roughly 20–30 minutes from downtown St. Petersburg's museums — a beautiful beach base for a couple who'll drive to the arts.
- Don't Miss: the building itself — a pink Moorish castle on the Gulf, a genuine 1928 landmark that functions as a destination in its own right. Give the spa and the sand real time.

Why we chose it
It's a modern Gulf-front resort on Clearwater Beach (430 S Gulfview Blvd) where every room faces the Gulf — about 230 rooms, a zero-entry pool, a spa, and beachfront dining at Sea-Guini, right by the Beach Walk promenade. Sleeker and calmer than the strip's big family resorts: there's no bad-view room, and the sunset comes with the balcony.

The St. Pete hotel for a foodie and craft-beer traveler when you want to walk to the breweries and the best tables and skip the car.
Why we chose it
It's the 1925 Mediterranean-Revival landmark on the downtown St. Petersburg waterfront (501 5th Ave NE), on the National Register — freshly through a full renovation and rebranded a Marriott Autograph Collection hotel (the first phase completed 2023). About 360 rooms, plus a golf club, tennis, a marina, and a spa. We've stayed here — over a packed Fourth of July, and it was still absolutely wonderful — and its real value for an eating-and-drinking trip is the address: you can walk everywhere, from Central Avenue's breweries to Beach Drive's tables to the Dalí, and the St. Pete Pier is right there.
- Don't Miss: the location — you can eat and drink your way across downtown, from the EDGE District taprooms to Beach Drive, and walk home, with the Pier steps away. No car for the food.
- Best Room: verified (we stayed) — the location is the best-room argument: you can walk everywhere and the Pier is right there. Book a room on the marina / Tampa Bay side of the historic main tower for the view over the water; the pool is amazing, the lobby is beautiful, and the service is great. (We didn't clock a specific suite category — the exact post-renovation room hierarchy is still a confirm-on-site item.)
- Worth the Money? Yes — the walkable-downtown landmark location is the whole thing, and the pool, lobby, and service back it up; you'll drive to the Gulf beaches for sand.
- What We'd Do Differently:
- book it for the walkable downtown location, not the beach — it's on the bay and the marina, and the Gulf sand is a 20–40 minute drive
- go in knowing a holiday weekend runs packed (ours did) — wonderful anyway, but not a quiet one
- use the free SunRunner or a short ride to St. Pete Beach, and save the car for the beach days.
🪙 Smart Alternative: AC Hotel St. Petersburg Downtown — the design-hotel play in the same walkable downtown, and one we've stayed at, multiple times. It's a sleek 172-room AC-by-Marriott a few blocks off the waterfront (110 2nd St N) with a rooftop pool and a genuinely fun rooftop bar (Cane & Barrel), right in the middle of everything, for a tier below the Vinoy's landmark rates. You trade the 1925-resort grandeur, the marina, and the golf and spa for a smaller, more central design base. And a local move: our favorite Greek hole-in-the-wall, Mio's Grill & Cafe, sits directly across the street (119 2nd St N) — the kind of place you'd walk past a million times if you didn't know.

It's the big modern Gulf-front resort on Clearwater Beach (100 Coronado Dr) — about 340 rooms, a rooftop pool and bar, a family pool deck, and several restaurants, steps from Pier 60 and the sand. It's the resort built to hold a whole group: a range of rooms, a pool scene, and everything on-site, right on the beach strip.

The honest trade: it's not beachfront — it sits across Gulf Blvd from Sand Key Beach (beach access; the suites face the bay and Intracoastal), so you swap sand-at-the-door for suite space, more calm, and a better rate off the busy main strip.
