Worth it? YES for the beach half of a St. Augustine trip: Anastasia State Park is the standout — ~4 miles of protected, natural Atlantic beach with dunes, a calm tidal lagoon good for kids/paddling, and rentals, all for ~$8/vehicle. St. Augustine Beach proper adds a pier, casual eats, and lifeguarded summer swimming. It's the natural counterweight to a history-heavy few days. Mind Atlantic surf/rip currents and swim near lifeguards.

Who it’s NOT for: Travelers on a strictly car-free downtown trip — the beach is a ~10–15 min drive over the Bridge of Lions (rideshare/trolley possible but a car is far easier). [object Object] Visitors wanting a lively boardwalk scene — these are natural/residential beaches (esp. Anastasia SP), calmer than a resort strip.

Skip it if: Your trip is purely the historic district and you have no beach day in it — otherwise the island is a ~15-min drive and easily worth a morning. Skip beach-driving unless you've confirmed current rules for your access point.

Time needed: A half-day to a full beach day; ~10–15 min drive from the historic district. (research: floridastateparks, floridarambler)

Best time: Late spring + early fall for warm water + thinner crowds; summer is peak (hot, busy, afternoon storms). Mornings for calmer conditions + parking. Check surf/rip-current + lifeguard status.

Cost: $Booking: none for day beach visits (pay ~$8/vehicle at Anastasia State Park; free/metered lots elsewhere); Anastasia State Park CAMPING books well ahead if you want to stay in the park.
